Fun in the sun! It seems to me that swimming tends to bring out the rowdy side in a lot of people, and my cartoon roomies are no exception. I think swimming is one of the best ways to beat the heat during those hot months. Coloring this cartoon took some fortitude, but the fourth panel made it all worthwhile!

Well, as far as I know, no one has ever given a satisfactory answer to "How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?". If Candace says with absolute conviction that the answer is forty-seven cords, that’s good enough for me! It’s also a good way to turn the tables on someone who’s out to stump you with that age old question.

Sometimes the dumbest jokes get the biggest laughs (from me, anyway). Candace can be a chronic joker at times, often pushing it when trying to entertain people who are growing annoyed. It’s a good combination with her all-too-serious boss, who’s more interested in taking care of business.

I drew this cartoon years before I ever had a smartphone. But even an outsider has no trouble seeing the effects these sneaky little devices have on human attention! Now that I own one of my own I fully understand how important it is to keep your guard up and to always know what’s going on around you. What’s really kind of sad is that this cartoon, while humorous, doesn’t even qualify as satirical where some people are concerned.

I’m paraphrasing here, but as I told a friend once, “Every day you can open the funny pages and find at least one Star Wars reference.”. That’s not entirely true, mind you, but these nods to A Galaxy Far, Far Away are extremely common among comic strips. For a time I thought myself above such shenanigans, at least mostly. But heck, drawing comics is supposed to be fun, and putting not one, but two lightsabers in Candace’s hands was just that! Toy lightsabers are made of plastic that lights up when you hit the button, but I made darned sure Candace’s weapons looked like the real deal! This could simply be her own vivid imagination at work, but it’s your call!

You can be a pet owner or not, but if someone loves you, that’s pretty special. ‘Nuff said!

Just another lousy day at the office! Truth is if I were the boss, I’d be pretty mad, too. At least Candace tried to be honest on a technicality when interrogated. In truth, Candace probably gets every Sunday off, but I needed a Sunday strip's extra space to tell a half decent story here.

A  Tour de Force
Through a Bruised
and Battered Psyche

The years take their toll,
They back up and run over you again,

There you are with your head in the toilet,
Puking up all that hope,
That’s right, keep puking,
When it’s done you’ll feel better.

Don’t walk out to the edge of the stage,
The audience can’t help you now,
You’re on your own.

Go ahead break a chair over someone’s head,
Tear up the whole damned room if it makes you feel better.
All they can do is call the cops.  They can’t really hurt you.
The worst damage was done years ago by ten year olds.
Old people can’t really hurt anybody, Children,
they’re the experts —

As you lie there in deep slumber
You stare ahead into the darkness
See the brake lights on the years
that you thought were speeding away —
Oh, yeah, that vehicle’s stopped again,
It’s time to back it up and run you over
Til your bones are ground
into the finest dust in the universe....

Words as Shadow

Once there was a poet

 Who knew everything
And had so very much to give
His tragedy was

He used words more as
                 Shadow than light.
